What is a short sale? When you can't pay the mortgage, your lender may want to talk with you about the possibility of a short sale. A short sale is a way to avoid foreclosure with benefits to both the borrower and the lender.
In a short sale, the loan is worth more than the house.
The process of a short sale begins when the borrower misses mortgage payments and cannot find an avenue to continue payments with the loan. In order to get some of that mortgage loan paid off, the lender will work with the borrower to put the house up for sale. When a loan is worth more than the house itself, the sales procedure is called a short sale.
